Glycine Combat Sub: The Best Value You‘ll Find In A Watch

The Glycine Combat Sub is a watch that offers incredible value. For just around 300 bucks you can get a swiss diver, with an ETA based movement, a sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 200m.

Glycine is a company with rich history. They were founded in 1914 in Biel, Switzerland and made one of the first GMT watches with the Glycine Airman in 1953. The company was taken over by the Invicta Watch Group a few years ago, however they have stuck to their origins and continue to make watches true to their heritage.

Today I’m going to be showing you their Glycine Combat Sub. In my opinion it’s one of the most value packed watches. You’re getting a diver-specked watch with a swiss movement and an overall great quality build.

The Watch

The Glycine Combat Sub is a very reliable and good quality watch. It is produced in switzerland and is made by a company with well known and rich history.

The watch has a screw down crown and offers a water resistance of 200 m. It has a sapphire crystal and a very well legible dial. The dial is matt black and has printed indices, which have a yellow-orange tone. The hands come in the same yellow-orange tone as well. However when you shine light on them, the loom takes on a green tone. Next to the indices the numbers 13-24 are printed on the dial as well, making it possible to also read military time. The date window is placed at 3 o‘clock. The date wheel matches the color of the dial, thereby not taking away too much attention from other aspects.

The watch has a 60-click-bezel, which has a very solid feel to it and has little to no play. It has an aluminum bezel insert with a small loom pit at 12 o‘clock. The aluminum insert has a little shine, adding a bit flair to the overall look of the watch.

The Glycine Combat Sub houses a Swiss ETA 2824 movement, which is known to be very reliable, durable and inexpensive to fix. Finding a similar a watch with the same movement in this price segment is near to impossible and thereby distinguishes the Combat Sub from many other watches.

The Case

Case-size: 42 mm

Case- thickness: 11 mm

Lug to lug: 50 mm

Lug-width: 22m

The watch has a brushed finish with a polished finish on the sides. It has a solid case back with a Glycine emblem on it. The watch wears a little large, however it does still work on smaller wrists. This is possible thanks to the lugs, which tilt downwards rather aggressively towards the end. The case is rather thin and looks very slim on the wrist as well. Overall the build quality of the case is very good and what you would expect from a watch under 500 dollars.

The Bracelet

The Bracelet has a brushed finish matching the watch itself and offers a rather good build quality. It‘s very rugged and nice. It has solid endlinks and a solid clasp, however the bracelet is a push pin bracelet, which can be rather impractical when trying to adjust it. The clasp has the Glycine logo etched into it and offers 4 adjustment holes, leaving plenty of room for fine adjustment.

Conclusion

Overall the Glycine Combat Sub is a great and value packed watch. It has a very solid build and has many aspects, that are usually not found in the same price range. For the fact it has a sapphire crystal, an ETA movement and is made in switzerland, all for under 500 dollars, makes this the best watch you can find in this price segment. Although it has a few downsides, such as the push pin bracelet and the rather large diameter, all in all this an amazing and great watch. So if you‘re able to get one of these for an attainable and comfortable price, I would absolutely go for it.
